Parent Information

Arrivals

The school building will open at 7:30 a.m., and students will not be admitted earlier.  Students who arrive early  are to sit in the Cafeteria or Forum only and not in the Main Office. Breakfast will be available to students . Students are not allowed to wander the hallways or go to the locker areas or the 2nd or 3rd floors until the bell sounds at 7:55 a.m.

Early Dismissals

Occasionally, we will have early dismissals from school. Unless it is an emergency, it will be noted on our school calendar in advance and/or sent through a call system or posted on our website.  We will also do our best to send out email splashes to any parents who have shared their email addresses with us.

Early Pick-Ups by Parents

Early pick-up disrupts the learning process.  While we understand that appointment scheduling and emergencies are unavoidable, we ask that parents limit early pick-ups. Also, students who miss more than 15 minutes of a class may be marked as absent from the class.  If it is necessary to take your child out of school early, you must come in person to the Main Office and present photo identification. We check identification for the protection of our students. Further, the person picking up the student must be listed on their record.  Parents may complete a form to add names of individuals allowed to pick-up your child.

Late Pick-Ups by Parents

Students must clear the campus within 30 minutes of dismissal, or by 3:30 p.m.  Staff members will not be available to supervise students beyond this time and students will not allowed to remain in the building.  

Leaving School without Permission

Leaving the building without permission is a serious offense, i.e. going to a restaurant off campus or leaving early without permission from parents and the Main Office. Neither the school nor parents know where the student is. Offenders will be suspended. This is considered a flagrant violation of school rules and regulations.

Mondays through Fridays, the academic day begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 3:20 PM

We follow a traditional seven-period schedule.

Our school does not require a uniform. However, students must abide by this dress code

General requirements

• Students may be required to wear certain types of clothing, usually for safety reasons, while participating in classes such as physical education, shop, chemistry, etc., or in curricular and extracurricular classes or activities such as band, choir, dance, drama, and theater.
• Students are responsible for keeping themselves and their clothes neat and clean.
• Students may wear their hair in any style they choose.
• Students may wear headdress (such as hats, religious headwear, hoodies, etc.) if it allows the face to be visible to staff and does not interfere with the line of sight of any student or staff.
• Students may wear PPE (masks, gloves) to continue to guard against COVID-19.

Students May Not Wear

• Styles of clothes that endanger themselves or other students.
• Bedtime attire such as pajamas, undershirts, or undergarments as outerwear.
• Students’ clothing or tattoos may not display statements or pictures that are related to the use of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, or sex, or that promote hate and/or violence or signify gang affiliations. 
• Attire that may be considered weapons, including but not limited to chain belts or wallet chains.
• Jewelry or similar artifacts that are obscene or may cause disruptions to the educational environment.
• Hair rollers or hair curlers. 
• Flip-flops, house slippers, steel-toe-shoes or boots, or any other type of footwear that could constitute a safety hazard.

Medical Scrubs

In addition to our traditional dress attire, students have the option of wearing scrubs. Below are some details about scrub attire Do’s and Don'ts.  

• Dos: Wash and press your scrubs daily. Scrubs must be clean and free of contaminants. Wear solid-colored sets. Wear white t-shirts and thermal underwear if needed during the winter months. Short white lab coats may be worn.
• Don'ts: Don't wear street clothes under your scrubs. Don’t mix and match tops and bottoms (you must wear the complete set). Don’t wear boots, open-toe shoes, or other inappropriate shoes.  

Transportation is not provided for students enrolled in Benjamin Carson High School, however, students may qualify for bus cards.

Bus Cards

Detroit Department of Transportation (D-DOT) bus cards will be issued to students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

Free D-DOT Bus Pass

1. Student must meet low-income threshold on the Supplemental Students Services Survey.
2. Student must attend his/her neighborhood high school or an assigned district-wide school
3. Student must reside within the boundary of the assigned school and live more than 1.5 miles from that school.

Reduced D-DOT Student Fare Card

1. Student must meet low-income threshold on the Supplemental Student Services Form.
2. Student must attend his/her assigned neighborhood high school.=

REPLACEMENT BUS CARDS ARE NOT PROVIDED TO STUDENTS WHO LOSE THEIR BUS CARDS.

Student Drivers & Vehicles

Student drivers are required to register and park their vehicles in the main entrance parking lot.  Forms are available in the main office. Vehicles not registered will be towed at the owner’s expense.  Further, student drivers are asked to adhere to all rules while driving on the school’s property (speed limit, loud music, etc.).  Students who fail to comply with the established rules will have their parking privileges revoked.
